Weinstein takes world on Wu Xia
Wu Xia (武俠), the period martial arts actioner that plays tomorrow as a midnight screening in Cannes has been acquired in a large slew of territories by The Weinstein Company (TWC).
TWC has bought rights to the world excluding Asia and France and is expected to handle the theatrical release itself in North America. Sales were handled by We Distribution. French rights were previously sold to TF1.
The film is directed and produced by Peter Chan (陳可辛) through his We Pictures company and stars Donnie Yen (甄子丹), Kaneshiro Takeshi (金城武) and Tang Wei (湯唯). It also marks the return to the screen after nearly two decades of Jimmy Wang (王羽).
The story sees the quiet lives of a papermaker (Yen) and his wife (Tang) disrupted when an unorthodox detective arrives in their village looking for clues into the surprising deaths of two bandits.
Technical credits also include fast-rising cinematographer Jake Pollock (The Message 風聲, Monga 艋舺), veteran director of photography Lai Yiu-fai (黎耀輝, Infernal Affairs 無間道, 2046), production designer Yee Chung-man (奚仲文, The Warlords 投名狀, Comrades, Almost a Love Story 甜蜜蜜), and leading costume designer Dora Ng (吳里璐, Bodyguards and Assassins 十月圍城, Legend Of The Fist: The Return Of Chen Zhen 精武風雲 陳真).
"During the production, Donnie was telling me that Wu Xia becomes more and more like a Weinstein movie. It's no coincidence that Harvey likes the film," said Chan in a statement.
TWC has also acquired first option to remake rights for the film.
